So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate, and she also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate.(Gen 3:6)
I have read this verse a million times in my journey as a Christian. But today...the Lord showed me something different...a jewel that I want to share with you.
What I know: The serpent deceived Eve that day in the Garden and Eve proceeded to offer the deception to her husband...this, we all know.
What I don't know: WHY was Eve deceived? There are MANY theological answers for this question, but what my eyes were opened to this morning was this: The serpent appealed to Eve's innermost desire...what God had created her to be...helpmate, nurturer and cultivator of hearts and beauty.
Eve saw the tree was good for Food...Proverbs 31:14-16 "She is like the ships of the merchant; she brings her food from afar. She rises while it is yet night and provides food for her household and portions for her maidens. She considers a field and buys it; with the fruit of her hands she plants a vineyard." (italics added)
It was a delight to her eyes... Proverbs 31:21 "She is not afraid of snow for her household, for all her household are clothed in scarlet. She makes bed coverings for herself; her clothing is fine linen and purple." (italics added)
It would Make one wise...Proverbs 31:25,26 "Strength and dignity are her clothing, and she laughs at the time to come. She opens her mouth with wisdom, and the teaching of kindness is on her tongue. (italics added)
I see a woman who thought she was fulfilling the very desires God had placed in her inmost being...the desire to provide a full table, beautiful clothing and home and to speak wisdom and truth. Wasn't the serpent cunning????
I know many times we think the Lord is placing an opportunity on our hearts, because "after all...it fulfills His calling on my life." BUT NOTHING God asks you to do will EVER go against his Word...not even if it the fruit LOOKS Godly! Scripture tells us that Satan masquerades as an angel of light! (2 Corinthians 11:14-15) This is a great warning to us...a great big "BEWARE" sign from the Lord!
Eve should have stopped and said..."All these are fruit will fulfill the desires of my heart...but what did GOD say? He said DO NOT EAT of this tree! I don't understand...I don't understand...but I WILL follow what I KNOW you have said." Isn't that all the Lord is asking of us...obedience...so that he may give us TRUE life, and not one filled with pits and worms?
Charm is deceitful, and beauty is vain, but a woman who fears the LORD is to be praised.(Pro 31:30)
It's about seeking HIM...in ALL our ways...even when the Fruit Looks Godly.
May Wisdom be in our Hearts and our Guide be the Holy Spirit. May we smell the spoil despite the beauty that our eyes behold.
