Our dog was a stray. Really, we like to call him a gift from God. He is beautiful, trained, gentle, neutered and doesn't even poo in our yard! LOL! He didn't, however, come without quirks. When Shadow first came to us, he was afraid of EVERYTHING...the broom, the hose, a stick. We assume that he was beaten at one time or another by the way he cowered and ran with his tail between his legs. How sad!
We've had Shadow for almost 3 years now and we enjoy him immensely. As I was sweeping the porch this morning where he was lying, I laughed to notice that he didn't even TRY to move! What an about face from the past years of running in the opposite direction of a broom. It has taken time, but he has learned to trust.
It made me think...there are so many people who approach God in the same way. They have been "beaten" by life and mishandled by people and they cower as others, even the Lord tries to care for them. They find it hard to believe that there is a gentle hand...much less that anyone, ESPECIALLY God would extend it their way. Jesus says in Matt 11:28-30,
"Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light."
As Christians, we NEED to be the hands and feet of Christ...after all WE are the Body. It reminds me of the Casting Crowns song If We Are The Body. The song is about people in need, whether emotional, spiritual or physical, that are rejected by the Christians around them because of their outer appearance.
But if we are the body Why aren't His arms reaching? Why aren't His hands healing? Why aren't His words teaching? And if we are the body Why aren't His feet going? Why is His love not showing them there is a way? There is a way
My point is...If you are hurting...KNOW that Jesus is waiting for you. He has a gentle hand and love in His arms. He is a Strong Tower and Refuge. KNOW that their are Christians who will extend the love of Christ to you and give you hope. You too, can become like Shadow who has learned not to fear.
If you are The Body of Christ...ACT LIKE IT! The scripture tells us not to regard people for what they look like, have, don't have. Extend a hand of Hope and be the arms of Christ for someone in need.
