Creating A Balanced Life

What does you day look like?  Is it hurried and bustled?  Do you feel like you are burning the candle at both ends?  Has the week, month or even ayear passed and you are left wondering where the time went and what you have to show for it?

I know I feel this way at times...If you have children, you probably do, too.

As Mom's we often get caught in the whirlwind of activities. From play-dates to soccer practice and all of the extras that seems so important.  Before we know it we are sinking in the quicksand of our calendars and are desperately reaching for a branch so we can pull ourselves out.

A little revelation for you:

You OWN Your Calendar!

I know that may sound very basic to some of you, but to others...This is a light-bulb moment!

So many times we fill our calendars and our lives before we have taken the time to build the framework of our hearts and family.  This is were the problem occurs.

Our God is a God of order.  Just as he formed and filled the Earth, we too can form and fill our schedules and lives...without the sinking, drowning  burned out feelings  we created when we fill first. Look at the example God gave us in His word.  From the very beginning, there was a framework...then the filling of it.

● Day One = God created light, formed heavens & earth ● Day Four = Filled wit sun, moon and stars ● Day Two = God separates water and sky ● Day Five = Filled wit fish and birds ● Day Three = Formed land and vegetation ● Day Six = Filled wit animals and man Genesis 1 **

Sally Clarkson challenges moms to examine what is Good, Better or Best...remembering that choosing what is Good can rob you and your family of what is Best. When you look at activities from that really makes choosing easier.

Jeremiah 29:11-13 says

For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you a hope and a future. Then shall ye call upon me, and ye shall go and pray unto me, and I will hearken unto you. And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart.

Lay your busy-ness before the Lord and ask for His wisdom.  He ALREADY knows the plan!  How wonderful is that?! Not only that, but His plans are for a Hope and a Future!  He never intended for His children to feel like they were spiraling out of control! In fact He tells us in His Word to

"Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light."

Matthew 6:33 tells us to

"seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you."

When we seek the Lord first...everything lines up. It doesn't mean we won't be busy. No. But we won't feel like we are drowning in the quicksand of too many commitments.  We won't feel like we're "Missing It" as the Mom continually tells Peter in the movie Hook.

Now for a little practical application:

At Allume, Tricia Goyer challenged us to evaluate our week by writing down EVERYTHING we do in a week (including diaper changes and showers) then rate them 1-4.

  1. Everything you have to do: feeding the kids, homeschooling, getting dress, spend time with God.
  2. Things you should do: laundry and housecleaning, cook dinner, homework with kids
  3. Things you enjoy and are helpful: Bible study, exercise class, play dates, social media
  4. Things you do because you were afraid to say no, or because you wanted to look good or have you kids look good.

Now the fun part:  CUT ALL the 4's and as many of the 3's as you can!

Now...OWN your calendar

Start a new one...erase the old one and ask yourself some tough questions: What Is important? What lines up with your framework?

Remember, When you seek Him first,

"God will empower you to achieve His purposes" ~Tricia Goyer, Allume, 2012

I pray you will redeem your time. I pray you will take back your calendars and in turn take back the Life that God has planned and carved out for you and your family.Be Intentional to Pursue God about the busy-ness in your life.  He is faithful and will guide you to the place He has for you.

Delayed in PA

Ready for a story?  I have one that most of you don't know. It's not dark. It's not twisted, but for me, it is an adventure I will not soon forget. Packing up Saturday evening really was a breeze.  Jennifer and I had almost everything ready with high hopes of sleeping in before catching our late afternoon flight back to Dallas just in time to beat Sandy as it approached the shores of New Jersey.

1:00 heart rate is high and has woken me up.  I call Hubby and he tells me to wake Jennifer. Looking for a Blood Pressure cuff, she calls the front desk and in about 4 minutes there is an EMT in my room!  Talk about FAST!

My BP was fine, Heart Rate still elevated so off we went to Harrisburg Hospital only two short blocks away.

Chest x-ray...normal Cat scan...normal EKG...ABNORMAL

NO other symptoms.  No difficulties breathing. No Pain. No swelling. They were stumped, so I was admitted.

Remember...we are supposed to be catching a plane to come HOME! With an appending "Perfect Storm" looming off the coast and the threat of being stuck in PA for an extended time, Hubby, instead flew to PA to be with me.

God's hand was evident in every detail.

To make a long story a little shorter...

  • Every SINGLE person I came in contact with at Harrisburg Hospital was kind!  There was not one single apathetic  "this is just my job" attitude...not even from the custodians!  Praise the LORD!
  • My phone notifications were non-stop from the sweet gals I met at Allume that were praying for me!
  • My children were spending time with my sister, her family and my parents...which was a blessing all in itself.
  • Jennifer's mother-in-law, Debbie, who 'just so happened' to be visiting her daughter, who, by the way, works at Harrisburg Hospital, came to sit with me until my hubby was able to get to Harrisburg.
  • I had a massive prayer chain of people I have never met in South Carolina lifting me up before the Throne of God as well as many, many prayers from my small East Texas home being lifted high.
  • Every flight Jason was supposed to be on was delayed...but there were seats available on earlier delayed flights and what should have been a midnight arrival turned out to be an 8:00 arrival!

Stress Test...normal EKG...Abnormal Result...I'm Abnormally Normal! (LOL!  I could have told them that!)

I was released with instructions to resume normal activities and check in with my Dc. to inform him of what had happened. No meds. No diet change. No restriction! God's hand, again.

THE STORM...Well, there wasn't much to write about by the time Sandy reached where we were staying.  By 11:00 pm, the Mayor of Harrisburg has already toured the city and commented on how "blessed" we were to have such minimal damage. Just a few trees down. No injuries.

My heart goes out to those who weren't so fortunate.  I pray for God's hand of healing and peace to be on them.  For HIS name to be glorified as he turns what was intended for evil into beauty beyond our comprehension.

So, to wrap it up...Jason and I flew home Wednesday. No delays and smooth flights.

I am so thankful to know that I can cast my cares upon a God that has His hand in the mix.  I do NOT serve a God who is merely the Creator and then un-involved.  I could feel His peace pouring over me like a warm balm.  I KNOW that he heard the prayers of so many petitioning on my behalf. And even though I still had to walk through this difficulty, I know that He reigns on the Throne of my heart.  I will praise Him now, as I praised Him in the storm of the ER room.  I will praise Him now, as I praised Him in the midst of "the Perfect Storm". I will praise Him all of my days.

Things My Roomie Should Know

This post is out of the ordinary for's also out of my comfort zone, because it's talking about ME and not my relationship with the Lord.  It makes me feel vulnerable! LOL!  However, I am heading to a phenomenal Christian women's blogging conference, Allume, in a bit so am linking up with other attendees as we try to get to know each other a little better before the conference. SO...with no further ado, here are the 10 things my Sweet Roomie, Jennifer @ The Kindle Crew, needs to know about me ;)

1. I, too, sleep with it COLD at night!  Praise the Lord you're not cold-natured!2. I sleep with my phone on the bed next to my head and check it when I wake up...which is usually several time throughout the night.  I sleep well...when I sleep!3. I am NOT a night owl, but I AM an early bird.  The morning beckons me out of bed...along with the coffee pot! Don't miss understand...just because I'm not a night Owl, that doesn't mean I CAN'T stay up ;)

4. COFFEE...need I say more?!  I am JUST like my grandparents...I have a cup going all day...and I'm not THAT old ;)5. If I don't get the WORD in me in the morning...I'm exhausted, physically, mentally and emotionally, by evening. I think it's so awesome that the Lord fills me up in all manners...not just spiritually speaking. 6. I drink a TON of water during the night! I'll even get up and refill my cup if necessary. I drink a ton during the day, but I am always surprised at how thirsty I am in the middle of the night.7. I don't wash my face at night. I know, I know...but I don't!8. I will probably snore. It depends on how exhausted I am, but I'm sure you'll hear it at least once during our week together...SORRY!9. When I sleep, I sleep hard, yet I can hear everything! I am completely alert to whoever is in the room and then seconds later be right asleep. If you get up, I'll know it. If you turn over...I'll know. I guess it's a mom thing, right?

10. I am looking forward to spending time with you as much or more than attending the conference. God has so graciously put you in my life and it is to my great joy that we will be learning and playing together for almost a week!

So there you have it...a little about me! Whew!
