This morning, in my reading, I came across two verses that resounded in my Spirit. I don't really know why they stood out among the other 10 or so I read, but I feel I need to share them.
"It is better to hear the rebuke of the wise, than for a man to hear the song of fools. For as the crackling of thorns under a pot, so is the laughter of the fool: this also is vanity." Ecclesiastes 7:5-6
As I read this, I had many thoughts flood my mind. I thought of my sweet 11 year old who would rather make people laugh than save face. His immaturity sometimes leaking out. I thought of my life and times when I surrounded myself with "friends" that made me "feel" good, but there was no dept to our relationship. And then I thought of the present situation I, and many of my current friends, find ourselves in. How do we listen to the wise when the fools are SO loud that their songs drown out the melody of Godly wisdom, rebuke and correction?
Scripture tells us not to be lulled to sleep. It warns us of the "tickling of ears" that will turn us away from truth and sound doctrine (2 Tim 4:3.4). Scripture also tells us in Hebrews 12:11 that "...no chastening for the present seemeth to be joyous, but grievous: nevertheless afterward it yieldeth the peaceable fruit of righteousness unto them which are exercised thereby." Over and over in scripture we are told that Godly correction and rebuke yields life and peace and righteousness. So why do we listen to the songs of the fool?
Simple...our flesh cries out for attention, for a place of belonging (even when it is a facade), for companionship (even if it's just a moment). We give our flesh control over our spirit when we give into the desires it is crying out for. Telling our flesh "NO!" sometimes hurts, it can leave us lonely by the world standards, but we are to look to our Heavenly Father for ALL our needs. Only he can fill our lonesomeness, rejuvenate us from weariness, and give us a hope and a future!
If the songs of the fool are tickling your ear and the complacency of status quo has you in it's death grip...ask the Lord to silence the fools and replace them with the WISE. Find someone that will encourage you in the Word and even give loving rebuke so that you can live with the peacable fruit of righteousness. If you examine your heart and find that YOU are the fool...repent and ask the Lord to shut your mouth, change your heart and send someone to hold you accountable.
The peaceable fruit of righteousness....doesn't that sound nice!
